According to Made of Honor, the little cardboard thingies that go around drinks at coffee shops, is called a coffee collar, and was invented by Patrick Dempsey's character circa 1996.
Just an interesting fact.
I've been looking for a more "permanent" coffee collar, so as not to have to waste the cardboard ones everytime I go. I bought one a few weeks ago at the craft fair, and used my felt cup muff for the first time today. (I like cup muff better than coffee collar. It rhymes. I like when things rhyme.) I doubt my caramel apple cider even contains caffeine, but it's still environmentally friendly.
There is a definite chill in the air here today. And what better way to usher in Fall than with a nice, big pot of chili. Of course, I do not have a big pot, and I do not know how to make chili, but that was only a minor set-back. A few phone calls to Mom, trips to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and the grocery store, and I made chili!Yes, you should be impressed. It was quite good, and that's just not me talking, the roommate thought so as well. (Yes, she could have been lying.) There were a few burnt pieces, but that just adds protein. And it won't stop me from eating the leftovers all week.
There are some days when the need to be in the outside world is highly overrated. Like today. I left my apartment exactly once, to take out the trash, and that was it. I had planned all week to sleep until I woke up, and to lay in bed watching How I Met Your Mother season three on DVD, which I specifically ordered from Amazon for the occasion. And that is exactly what I did. But I also cleaned my room, did laundry, organized papers, and sorted through a bunch of random junk. I also took a long shower and then lit candles to relax, using some Mary Kay products that the sister gave me, my first use of "her" stuff. It smells really good and is purple, and I like purple.
Ever since I had my first sushi a few weeks ago, I’ve been craving it again. But I’ve been too busy to head to a new restaurant to try it so today I bought supermarket sushi at Harris Teeter.Even before I tried it at all I always thought it was kind of nasty to buy it from a case at the grocery store. But other than being too loose, and having far too much cucumber, it wasn’t too bad. I also broke down and ordered the Caramel Apple Spice at Starbucks, instead of calling it the Caramel Apple Cider. I don't know why they changed the name from cider to spice last year, but I resisted just because I'm petty like that. And because it was probably for the same non-existent reason they can't just call a small a small instead of a tall. Or venti. Or whatever.
And got a pink contact lens case with my saline solution in support of Susan G. Komen breast cancer research. I feel like there are more products than ever this year that are going to support breast cancer research, which can be nothing but good.
I develop overly strong attachments to certain drink and food items. And these often end up being the so-called "seasonal" items that are only available certain months of the year, for no apparent reason other than to have me clump a year's worth of purchases into a 3 month period. (And royally piss me off, of course.) When I went to Cosi today with the intent to finally get a meatball sandwich that has been off their menu since May, I was told it was "gone, no more." I was quite upset but got another, far more inferior sandwich anyway, and whilst eating it wrote an email all but begging them to put it on the menu. I've been threatening to do this to Bojangles for years in protest of their delectable cinnamon biscuits only being available in western NC, but have yet to do it, so this is my first letter to a restaurant demanding the return of a favorite food item.
And lo and behold, the next day I got a response! Thus, come November 4, I will either be celebrating a certain candidate's victory with a warm, meatball aurora, or crying into my basil and provolone. I think it's time to have a chat with Bojangles now...
I am in the midst of a massive project at work, with lots of content and deadlines and meetings. Oh the meetings. Until now all of mine have been teleconferences, but today I had my first in person client meeting. It continues tomorrow, but for now I think it's going pretty well.
And now, to see if I can make it three for three this week by crashing and napping in the evening before really going to bed.
A few months ago I tried to make a Jacob's ladder out of string and failed, miserably. Tonite I played with a Jacob's ladder toy, with moderately more success. I love the illusion it creates and trying to get it to do different things. I wasn't that great at it, proving that even the smallest requirement of coordination escapes me, but it was entertaining for a few minutes nonetheless.
As much as I love my job and apartment and most of the time my life in DC, I did not want to leave home home today. It just went by too quickly. But leave I had to, and this time I left on a train out of Wilson train station, instead of Rocky Mount. It was smaller and a bit sketchier than the other, but it was closer to home, and meant I got 20 more minutes of chilling on the couch, which was exactly what I needed.
After the frenetic pace of the past few weeks, today was the first day in awhile I just got to sit and breathe. More or less. A houseful of family meant lots of talking and eating and fun times, more than worth my having to abandon my plan to sleep all day. And it ended with the brother, cousin, and I at a near-empty sports bar on a Sunday night, in downtown Goldsboro. Too much new in that sentence, that's for sure.
And that's that. My big sister is now a Mrs., Joey finally has a brother, and our family gained three new members in the end. Melissa was the prettiest bride I've ever seen, and one of the happiest too. And Mike wasn't too shabby, either. :-)
It was a beautiful ceremony and great reception with the much-loved wedding soup and full of lots of fun and laughing. And full of lots of new too. Obviously my new doesn't compare to Melissa and Mike's, but...
It was my first wedding of a sibling, my first time in a wedding, and first time catching a bouquet. (Which only took two threats of bodily harm and minimal elbow action.) I also helped a bride go to the bathroom and gave a speech only about five minutes after writing it. But we'll leave those last two out of the official compendium of new things.
I am so happy and proud of my sister, and my new brother-in-law, and my new nieces. That's all.
Pictures from the amazing family and wedding photographer, Aunt Shannon. (Let me know if you would prefer I not post them.)
